Art Project for Kids: Pointillism

My daughter and I had such a blast with this art project and talk about simple! Let me just say, I am no artist. In college, I maybe took one art history class and that is only because I heard the teacher was nice. Whenever I get crafty, it always looks homemade, but that does not stop me from having fun. Somehow both of my kids love art. It is something we do EVERYDAY! I never imagined art would be so big in my house, but it is one of those activities that is always opened and both of my kids freely visit it several times throughout the day. Here is a super simple art project for kids that is sure to wow them and any art admirers.

Art Project for Kids: Pointillism

Supplies:

  1. Cheap canvas painting from the thrift store, dollar store, or bargain store (The one we used was from Ross Dress For Less and it is a painting I have had on my wall for a few years and decided what the heck, let’s give it a face lift).

  2. painters tape

  3. Paint brushes (I prefer the fine tip for younger kids. It makes it easier to keep the dots smaller).

  4. Acrylic paint of your choice (we decided to go for a rainbow aesthetic, so we picked red, blue, purple, light green, dark green, yellow, orange, and pink).

  5. cup of water

  6. paper towel

Instructions:

  1. Get your kids excited for the art project and involve them from the very beginning. Look at some art books and get inspired. Rent some books on pointillism from the library or use the internet to show your child this new technique of art. Explain to them pointillism is a style of painting that uses lots of tiny dots of various colors. When you are up close, you can see all the tiny dots, but from far away, they all blend together.

  2. Together go to the store and hunt for a painted canvas to reinvent and make your own. Or, in my case, get your kids excited to take off the wall art that is currently hanging in your house and tell them your going to paint it!

  3. Once you have your painting, decide on a color pallet. Pick the colors out together. Use art books for color ideas and inspiration.

  4. Next, use your painters tape to cover up anything you do not want paint splattered on or painted.

  5. Set out your paint, paint brushes, cup of water, paper towel and your art piece at a safe place to do art. Because this is acrylic and not water-based paint, it always safe to either cover your floors with a table cloth, or take the project outside.
